Course description

SERPENT is a 3D continuous-energy Monte Carlo neutron and photon transport code, with built-in burnup calculation routine. The code is applicable to a wide range of reactor physics and radiation transport problems including traditional reactor physics, coupled multiphysics simulation, neutron and photon transport simulations for radiation dose calculation, etc.

This three-and-half-day in-person course is designed for beginners with no prior knowledge of SERPENT. The course focuses on reactor physics applications and equips the students with the necessary skills to independently set up and run their SERPENT models.

The course comprises lectures, step-by step examples and hands-on exercises allowing students to practice and reinforce their understanding of SERPENT. The topics covered:

  • Overview of general input syntax rules and SERENT input structure;
  • Setting up nuclear data libraries;
  • Material definition;
  • Geometry definition starting from a simple 2D fuel pin level and progressing to 3D core reactor models;
  • Plotting and visualization of the modeled geometry;
  • Setting up and initiating criticality calculations;
  • Setting up detectors and mesh detectors to gather extended information from simulations;
  • Post-processing SERPENT outputs to extract meaningful insights;
  • Visualization of results using mesh plots;
  • Generation of homogenized group constants for nodal diffusion reactor simulators
  • Burnup and decay calculations.
Payment information

The registration fee is 750 EUR and is to be made by credit card. This includes lunch and coffee breaks, and does not cover accommodation.

As soon as your registration has been accepted, you will receive the necessary information to proceed with payment. Course fees MUST be paid within three weeks of course confirmation.

Registrations will be open until places run out. We draw your attention to the fact this course can only host 20 participants, so please do not delay in registering and paying the course fee.

Note aux participants français : l'OCDE/NEA n'est pas un centre de formation. Pour cette raison, les frais d'inscriptions sont dus avant le début de la prestation et il ne sera pas établi de convention de stage.
