NEST Radiation exposure preparedness for Acute Radiation Syndrome infection response (REPAIR)

This project is under preparation and will be formally launched shortly. 

Led by the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI), the NEST REPAIR project addresses the urgent need for biomedical preparedness in nuclear and radiation emergencies, focusing on Acute Radiation Syndrome (ARS) and the prevention of secondary infections in immuno-compromised individuals. This project seeks to bridge gaps between nuclear science and infectious disease control by fostering multinational and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Background

Nuclear or radiation accidents involving large-scale radiation exposure, such as those that may  occur at nuclear reactor or radiation facilities, pose serious and immediate threats to human health. One of the most critical medical consequences is Acute Radiation Syndrome (ARS), which arises from high-dose radiation exposure (>2 Gy) and can cause severe damage to the hematopoietic, gastrointestinal and pulmonary systems. Even for those who survive the initial radiation insult, profound immunosuppression remains a major challenge, leaving individuals highly susceptible to secondary infections, particularly from commensal or opportunistic pathogens.

While substantial progress has been made in developing physical protection measures, such as structural fortification, shielding and radiation monitoring systems, medical countermeasures for radiation-exposed individuals have received comparatively less attention. Research and investment in systematic diagnostics, therapeutic strategies and infection control for ARS patients have remained insufficient, resulting in a critical gap in radiological emergency preparedness.

Given the global expectations of the increased use of nuclear and radiation technology, it is essential to strengthen not only physical and operational nuclear safety measures but also biomedical preparedness, particularly in the areas of diagnostics, treatments, and preventive solutions for radiation-exposed populations. Moreover, there is a notable lack of interdisciplinary collaboration between radiation biologists, immunologists and vaccinologists, which limits the ability to respond to complex health challenges such as post-irradiation infections and immune system recovery.

Objectives

To address this critical need, NEST REPAIR aims to: 

  • Foster international collaboration among experts in radiation biology, infectious diseases and vaccinology, building a cross-disciplinary research network to enhance global response capabilities to nuclear emergencies.
  • Provide hands-on training and mentorship for young researchers, postgraduate students and early-career professionals, equipping them with specialised knowledge and practical skills in radiation response, biosafety, and infection prevention (irradiated vaccines).
