WPNCS Expert Group on Uncertainty Analyses for Criticalify Safety Assessment

The necessity to formalise a procedure for the validation of codes for criticality computation based on rigorous techniques has become an important issue. The reasons for developing methodologies and tools that provide an approach for such a validation are as follows:

  • handling of fission materials has become more complex due to the diversity of fresh irradiated fuel (higher burnups, MOX and UOX fuel, increase in enrichment)
  • the changeover to innovative nuclear systems;
  • globalised demand for nuclear energy in countries with insufficient experience and infrastructure to manage fission materials;
  • economic realities requiring the reduction of costs related to the redundant safety margin.

First meeting of the Expert Group on Uncertainty Analyses for Criticalify Safety Assessment, 4-5 December 2008 at the NEA Headqueaters, France
