Inspection of Digital Instrumentation and Control (I&C) Systems Important to Safety

Programme The workshop is divided into three sessions: Opening Session; Technical Sessions; and a Final Summary Session. The technical sessions will have short plenary presentations in the followed by discussions in breakout groups. In addition a Technical Visit is scheduled for the third day.
Opening Session
The opening session will include overview presentations:
- Overview of past NEA Activities in the area of Digital I&C;
- Presentation on COMPSIS, NEA Computer-based Systems Important to Safety Database;
- Presentation on the results of the WGIP Survey.
Technical Session I
Technical Session I will address the following issues:
- applied software in nuclear systems important to safety;
- applied embedded software in nuclear systems important to safety; and
- the involvement of inspectors and their support organisations in verification and validation (V&V) activities.
The session format will include:
- presentations by a vendor and/or licensee;
- presentation by a technical support organisation;
- presentations by inspectors;
- discussion of answers and recommendations. Depending on the total number of participants, several breakout groups may be formed.
Technical Session II
Technical Session II will address the following issues:
- Ongoing analysis and inspection of digital I&C systems important to safety at site following the completion of commissioning;
- Processes to control modification and maintenance to software systems and operating experience (e.g., incorrect software modification).
The session format will include:
- presentations by a vendor and/or licensee;
- presentation by a technical support organisation;
- presentations by inspectors;
- discussion of answers and recommendations. Depending on the total number of participants, several breakout groups may be formed.
Final Summary Session The Session Chairs will present a summary of the main elements derived from the Technical Sessions. A selected group of participants will then participate in open panel discussion on the results of the workshop.
Discussion of additional areas and issues for future WGIP activities (e.g. IT/software security, configuration management, software FMEA, data communication, role assignment during inspection activities, inspection procedures (e.g. for software and parameter modifications).
