CSNI Task Group on Defence in Depth of Electrical Systems and Grid Interaction (DIDELSYS)

The NEA Committee on the Safety of Nuclear Installations (CSNI) has decided to set up a task group to examine Defence in Depth of Electrical Systems and Grid Interaction (DIDELSYS). The task was defined based on the findings of an NEA workshop on lessons learnt from the Forsmark-1 event in July 2006.

The Forsmark-1 event and its outcome raised a number of issues related to the electrical power supply to systems and components important to safety in nuclear power plants. Many of the issues that have been highlighted during the investigation of the causes of the Forsmark-1 event are of a generic nature.

The objectives of the task group are to:

  • provide state-of-the-art information regarding the robustness of safety related electrical systems (SRES), taking into account their interaction with other electrical equipment, the use of new technologies and the problems encountered when modernisation of existing plants is undertaken; and
  • provide guidelines for improving the communication and co-ordination between the grid (grid operator and regulator), the nuclear safety authorities and the licensees.

The task group will produce technical notes on these subjects which will be submitted to the CSNI for its consideration.
