Committee on Nuclear Regulatory Activities (CNRA)

Working Group on Inspection Practices (WGIP)

The CNRA believes that safety inspections are a major element in the regulatory authority's efforts to ensure the safe operation of nuclear facilities. Considering the importance of these issues, the Committee established a special Working Group on Inspection Practices (WGIP) in 1990. The purpose of the WGIP is to facilitate the exchange of information and experience related to regulatory safety inspections between NEA member countries. The working group is presently studying several inspection issues including:

  • Inspection of fire protection programmes;
  • Digital I&C inspections.

An eighth international workshop was held in 2006. The workshop addressed the following three main topics concerning inspection activities:

  • how regulatory inspections can promote, or not promote, good safety culture;
  • inspecting the interactions between the licensee and its contractors, and
  • future challenges for inspectors (e.g., new techniques, developing competence, etc.).

At present 18 NEA member countries participate in the work of the WGIP. Mr. Steve Lewis, NII, United Kingdom, is the current chair. Mr. Julio Crespo, CSN, Spain, and Mr. Radomir Rehacek, SONS, Czech Republic, serve as vice-chairs.
