Nuclear safetyThe NEA Committee on Nuclear Regulatory Activities (CNRA) and the NEA Committee on the Safety of Nuclear Installations (CSNI) met in December 2004. Both committees reviewed work accomplished during 2004 as well as proposed activities for the future. A number of workshops will be organised in 2005 and 2006 – for more details see the updated calendar of forthcoming workshops and seminars at www.nea.fr/html/nsd/calendar.html. Both committees also approved a joint CSNI/CNRA strategic plan for 2005-2009. The plan identifies the main challenges for nuclear safety over the next five years. These are likely to be:
The two committees plan to address these issues in the course of their work over the next five years. It focuses on assessing the technical safety cases for radioactive waste repositories, examining their underlying methodological and scientific bases. During the meeting of the IGSC core group on 10-11 January 2005 in Paris, France, two new initiatives in this area were elaborated for submission to the group's parent body, the NEA Radioactive Waste Management Committee. The IGSC plans to organise a symposium, currently entitled "Safety Cases for Deep Geological Disposal: Where do we stand?" at the end of 2006. The symposium will aim to gather practical experience of developing a safety case for geological radioactive waste repositories. The IGSC also plans to launch a new questionnaire-based exercise on the international experience of safety cases (INTESC). A major outcome of the INTESC exercise will be a report on the practical experiences of compiling safety cases for geological repositories and lessons learnt from current practices. The key findings of this report will be an important input to the proposed symposium. More information is available at www.nea.fr/html/rwm/igsc.html.
