Learning and Adapting to Societal Requirements for Radioactive Waste Management Nuclear Competence Building Disponible également en français : Stepwise Approach to Decision Making for Long-term Radioactive Waste Management Nuclear knowledge managementThe NEA co-sponsored a conference organised by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on Nuclear Knowledge Management: Strategies, Information Management and Human Resource Development on 7-10 September 2004 in Saclay, France. The objective of the conference was to reach a clear and common understanding of issues related to nuclear knowledge management for sustaining knowledge and expertise in nuclear science and technology. NEA participants made four presentations on the Agency's recent work in the areas of nuclear development, nuclear safety and Data Bank activities. More information is available at www.iaea.org/km/cnkm/index.html . Nuclear developmentThe Joint NEA/IAEA Uranium Group met on 29 August-1 September 2004 in Stráž pod Ralskem, Czech Republic. The meeting brought together representatives from 23 countries and was followed by field visits to the Rožná uranium mine in the Czech Republic and the Wismut GmbH operation near Chemnitz, Germany. The field visits showcased the ability and expertise in mining and mine remediation techniques in the Czech Republic and Germany. At Rožná, meeting participants visited the last operating uranium mine in Europe, descending to the mining face over 1000 metres below ground. State-of-the-art mine rehabilitation activities were demonstrated at the Wismut site. Nuclear safetyA workshop is being organised to discuss fire probabilistic safety assessment (PSA); it will be held on 23-26 May 2005 in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Numerous fire PSAs have shown that, depending on the design and operational characteristics of a given nuclear power plant, fire can be a significant or even dominant contributor to the overall risk for that plant. The WPNCS meeting was preceded by meetings of four WPNCS expert groups covering the following subjects: burn-up credit; criticality excursion analysis; source convergence analyses; and minimum critical values.
