from the Committee on the Safety of Nuclear Installations (CSNI) Nuclear scienceThe NEA Nuclear Science Committee has established an expert group to study very high burn-up fuel cycles in light water reactors. The expert group's aim is to produce a report on the potential benefits of very high burn-up (60100 gigawatt-days per tonne) covering both its technical and economic aspects. The report will identify technical problems associated with very high burn-up fuel cycles, but will not attempt to solve these problems. A first meeting of the expert group was held at OECD headquarters on 13-14 January 2004; the group's next meeting will be in autumn 2004.
