Nuclear
Regulatory Review of Licensee Self-assessment (LSA)
Possible
Implications of Draft ICRP Recommendations
Nuclear safetyUnder the aegis of the NEA, heads of OECD member country nuclear regulatory
authorities met on 17-18 June 2003 with high-level government officials
and executives from the nuclear industry to exchange perspectives on measuring,
assessing and communicating nuclear regulatory effectiveness. The main
conclusion of the forum is that regulatory performance indicators are
both good and useful in improving a regulator's effectiveness and efficiency,
but there are a number of areas that deserve attention. For example, incorrect
analysis of these indicators could lead to inaccurate decision making,
and misinterpretation can lead to misunderstandings by the stakeholders.
More information is available at www.nea.fr/html/general/press/2003/2003-03.html. At their annual meetings during the week of 16 June 2003, the NEA Committee on Nuclear Regulatory Activities (CNRA) and the NEA Committee on the Safety of Nuclear Installations (CSNI) reviewed their ongoing programmes of work and approved future activities. Several workshops will be organised in 2003 and 2004; for more details see the updated calendar of forthcoming workshops and seminars at www.nea.fr/html/nsd/calendar.html. Related linksDocuments

Nuclear scienceThe NEA Nuclear Science Committee (NSC) met on 4-6 June 2003 to review progress in its programme of work and to decide on any changes for the coming year. Discussions focused on the renewal of the mandates of the NSC's four working parties. These cover: nuclear data evaluation co-operation (WPEC); the physics of plutonium fuel and innovative fuel cycles (WPPR); criticality safety (WPNCS); and the partitioning and transmutation of nuclear waste (WPPT). The WPEC mandate was renewed for three years; the mandates of the other working parties were extended for one year to allow for further discussions and to ensure co-ordination between the different activities. Data Bank
The NEA Nuclear Science Committee Executive Group, which oversees the work
of the Data Bank, met on 4 June 2003 to discuss the latter's computer program
and nuclear data services. These services are increasingly solicited in
member countries. During 2002, computer program services recorded close
to 4 700 requests -- the highest figure ever. These included the distribution
of integral data sets as well as computer programs. The nuclear data service
registered more than 16 000 accesses to its online databases during
2002. The Executive Group endorsed the Data Bank's programme of work for
2004. The Executive Group also discussed the future of the Joint Evaluated
Fission and Fusion (JEFF) Project and decided to prolong its mandate for
another three years.
