Nuclear safety

An international forum on measuring, assessing and communicating regulatory effectiveness (MACRE 2003) will be held on 17-18 June 2003 in Paris. The forum aims to assess regulatory effectiveness from a range of perspectives including those of regulators, industry, government and stakeholders. The results of the NEA pilot programme of nuclear regulatory effectiveness indicators will be discussed and the forum's findings incorporated in a forthcoming revised edition of the NEA report Improving Nuclear Regulatory Effectiveness. An NEA workshop on "Redefining the Large-break, Loss-of-coolant Accident" will be held on 23-24 June 2003 in Zurich, Switzerland. Several NEA member countries are presently discussing regulatory changes that could lead to a redefinition of what constitutes a large-break, loss-of-coolant accident (LB-LOCA). Such a regulatory change would affect both the current operation and future design of nuclear reactors. HSK (the Swiss Nuclear Safety Inspectorate), PSI (Paul Scherrer Institute) and the OECD/NEA will co-sponsor the workshop, which will bring together regulators, researchers and industry representatives. Radiation protection

The Expert Group on the Processes of Stakeholder Involvement met on 4-5 February 2003 to discuss three recent case studies: the clean-up of uranium mill tailings at a mine in Canada; ongoing management issues at the Chernobyl site in Ukraine; and the rehabilitation of the Rocky Flats weapons production facility in the USA. These case studies will be discussed in depth at the Third Villigen Workshop on Stakeholder Issues in Radiation Protection, which will take place in Villigen, Switzerland on 21-23 October 2003. Nuclear science

The Expert Group on Pyrochemical Separations met on 24-25 February 2003 at OECD headquarters to discuss a draft report on pyrochemical separation techniques. The report reviews the status of national programmes and international collaboration, as well as research needs and possible future applications of pyrochemical separation techniques.
