DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM OR FUNCTION - The programs ALBEDO and ALBEZ are used to calculate the attenuation of scattered radiation in straight or bent air ducts for gamma radiation (0.1-3 MeV) and fast neutrons (0.1-14 MeV). With the programs the following geometries can be treated:

METHOD OF SOLUTION - In the case of gamma radiation the calculations are based on the Compton effect. The energy and angle dependency of the energy of the scattered photons and the albedo factors for the scattering is based on generally available literature.

RESTRICTIONS ON THE COMPLEXITY OF THE PROBLEM - The programs are restricted for gamma radiation to the energy range of 0.1 to 3 MeV. In the case of neutrons only fast neutrons can be treated in the range of 0.1 to 14 MeV. Furthermore, the albedos used in the codes are valid only for concrete ducts.

TYPICAL RUNNING TIME - Running time is strongly dependent on the division of source surface, scattering surfaces and receptor surface. Times can be as low as a few minutes. In the case of a very fine division of surfaces the running time could easily be an hour. Running time is also dependent on the speed of the PC.

MACHINE REQUIREMENTS - IBM-PC or compatible, mathematical coprocessor not required; code size would allow execution on a AT with 1.2 MB disk drive without a hard disk, but a hard disk is recommended.

OPERATING SYSTEM UNDER WHICH PROGRAM IS EXECUTED - The code was developed using Microsoft FORTRAN 5.0 without use of a mathematical coprocessor. The original system for the development was HP DOS 3.3. Code also runs on PC DOS and MS DOS.

In the case of neutrons the programs are valid only for fast neutrons. This is the range of validity of the albedo factors in the literature which describe the energy and angle dependencies of the scattered fast neutrons. The loss of energy of the neutrons due to scattering at the surface is neglected.

NEA 1353/01: NEA-DB compiled the programs and executed the test cases included in this package on a PC/0386 with 80387 math- co-processor.

NEA 1353/01: The programs were compiled with the Microsoft FORTRAN version 5.0 compiler running under MS-DOS 4.01.
