ESTS0279/03:
DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM OR FUNCTION - MATHEW generates a diagnostic mass-consistent, three-dimensional wind field based on point measurements of wind speed and direction. It accounts for changes in topography within its calculational domain. The modeled wind field is used by the Langrangian ADPIC dispersion model. This code is designed to predict the atmospheric boundary layer transport and diffusion of neutrally buoyant, non-reactive species as well as first-order chemical reactions and radioactive decay (including daughter products).
ESTS0279/03:
METHODS - MATHEW uses a variational analysis technique to determine a mass-consistent velocity field based on an interpolation of surface and upper air wind measurements (Sherman, 1978). The process of adjusting the interpolated winds for effects of local topography is controlled through the used of Gauss Precision Moduli parameters. These parameter values depend upon the atmospheric stability, which determines the relative adjustments of the horizontal and vertical velocities during the variational procedure. The current version uses a conjugate gradient computational scheme and has flexible boundary conditions handling capabilities (Sugiyama et. al, 1994). ADPIC solves the advection diffusion equation with one of two methods. The original gradient diffusion method is a hybrid Eulerian-Langrangian particle-in-cell method (Lange 1978, 1979). The new Random Displacement Model (or RDM) is a purely Langrangian Monte-Carlo diffusion method, and is the recommended method (Ermak et. al, 1995; Nasstrom, 1995).
ESTS0279/03:
TYPICAL RUNNING TIME - Run time is dependent upon modeling time and several user-selected parameters (such as the number of marker particles used in ADPIC). A typical one-hour simulation can be completed in less that 1 CPU minute on a VAX 6610.
ESTS0279/03:
RELATED OR AUXILIARY PROGRAMS - MATHEW reads a grid description along with gridded terrain heights from a file generated by the TOPOG code. MATHEW also inputs a pre-processed three-dimensional gridded wind field generated by MEDIC, the wind interpolation code. ADPIC output is fed to a post-processing graphics code, PLCNT, as well as a simple graphical and statistical analysis code, TIMEHIS. The various utility libraries that support the models are included.

HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS - Memory requirements vary with various compiled parameters such as the grid dimesions. For example for a MATHEW grid of 51x51x15 and an ADPIC grid of 41x41x15 the codes have the following memory requirements in a VAX/VMS environment: TOPOG 31 Megabytes, MEDIC 122 Megabytes, MATHEW 19 Megabytes, ADPIC 47 Megabytes, PLCNT 16 Megabytes, and TIMEHIS 123 Megabytes. Disk requirements vary with the run time and frequency of graphics, etc.
ESTS0279/03: FORTRAN PASCAL
ESTS0279/03:
OTHER PROGRAMMING OR OPERATING INFORMATION OR RESTRICTIONS - This software requires a Fortran-77 compiler with extensions for namelist/IO, long variable names and include files. Graphics output requires a GKS library, although all graphics can be removed via differential compilation. The full package also includes some DEC-Pascal routines, but these can also be removed via differential compilation.
