DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM OR FUNCTION - IRRAS4.16 is a program developed for the purpose of performing those functions necessary to create and analyze a complete Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA). This program includes functions to allow the user to create event trees and fault trees, to define accident sequences and basic event failure data, to solve system and accident sequence fault trees, to quantify cut sets, and to perform uncertainty analysis on the results. Also included in this program are features to allow the analyst to generate reports and displays that can be used to document the results of an analysis. Since this software is a very detailed technical tool, the user of this program should be familiar with PRA concepts and the methods used to perform these analyses.
4.
METHOD OF SOLUTION - IRRAS4.16 is written entirely in MODULA-2 and uses an integrated commercial graphics package to interactively construct and edit fault trees. The fault tree solving methods used are industry recognized top down algorithms. For quantification, the program uses standard methods to propagate the failure information through the generated cut sets.
5.
RESTRICTIONS ON THE COMPLEXITY OF THE PROBLEM - Due to the complexity of and the variety of ways a fault tree can be defined it is difficult to define limits on the complexity of the problem solved by this software. It is, however, capable of solving a
6.
TYPICAL RUNNING TIME - IRRAS4.16 running times are a function of the problem to be solved and the actions performed by the user.
7.
UNUSUAL FEATURES OF THE PROGRAM - This software is unique in several ways. First, it uses a relational database to store and manage the risk data associated with an analysis. Second it uses graphical editors to allow the analyst to construct and modify fault tree and event tree logic. Third the algorithms used to solve the fault trees and accident sequences are very fast due to technical advances.
8.
RELATED AND AUXILIARY PROGRAMS - IRRAS4.16 is a replacement for version 4.15 of IRRAS which had bee submitted previously. The changes in this version include several minor bug fixes and a

substantial fault tree due to efficient methods. At this time, the software can efficiently solve problems as large as other software currently used on mainframe computers. Does not include source code.
significant change in the way IRRAS4.16 handles the situation where more cut sets are generated than can be stored in the data base. When the user solves a fault tree that has more cut sets than can be stored, IRRAS simply stops storing the cut sets at the point it determines that it cannot keep them all. IRRAS does display the results for all the cut sets generated, but only keeps a subset of the total. This subset was not the most probable cut sets. The procedure has caused much confusion, in that many assumed that IRRAS was keeping the most significant cut sets. Since this confusion may lead to some problems in reporting results, and since the change was very simple, the way the software works has been modified. IRRAS4.16 now keeps the most significant cut sets when the number of cut sets is more than can be stored. This should eliminate any confusion on how IRRAS handles this situation.
