DESCRIPTION OF TEST FACILITY - The Winfrith High Pressure Rig operated on a once-through system using positive displacement pumps to provide a flow of up to 0.9kg/s of demineralised water at pressures up to 34.0Mpa. The water was heated to the required temperature by a 750kW pre-heater. Both inlet and outlet pipework were fitted with drain valves and could be trace heated by an automatic temperature controlled system. A nitrogen supply was provided for purging the system. The vertically mounted test section consisted of a Nimonic 75 tube, 9.75mm ID and 14.0mm OD with a heated length of 920mm, which was directly heated by a manually controlled AC supply. Power was introduced by two 36mm thick nickel-plated copper blocks at either end of the heated length, which acted as the hot patches and were instrumented with thermocouples to enable the heat fluxed to be evaluated. The position of the dry-out front was maintained upstream of the test section by heat transfer from the hot patches. The test section itself had a total of 42 bare wire thermocouples, 0.3mm in diameter, positioned in pairs and attached to the outer surface. 4.
DESCRIPTION OF TESTS - Steady state tests were performed to evaluate post-dryout heat transfer in upflow and downflow conditions. For the upflow tests, conditions were varied over the following ranges; pressure = 0.2 - 2.01Mpa, flow = 48 - 1010kg/m2s, inlet subcooling = 2.4 - 26.4ºC, equilibrium quality = 0 - 58% and heat flux = 14 - 360Kw/M2. For the downflow tests, conditions were varied over the following ranges; pressure = 0.2 - 0.51Mpa, flow = 48 - 504kg/m2s, inlet subcooling = 3.9 - 8.3ºC. equilibrium quality = 0 - 19% and heat flux = 6 - 150kW/m2. 5.
EXPERIMENTAL LIMITATIONS OR SHORTCOMINGS - Experimental conditions were limited by the ability of the hot patch to prevent the quench front entering the test section i.e. no data are available at high pressures, or very low qualities. 6.
PHENOMENA TESTED - Post-dryout heat transfer, 7.
SPECIAL FEATURES OF EXPERIMENTS - Provides low and intermediate pressure, steady state post-dryout data for both upflow and downflow. 8.
COUNTERPART EXPERIMENTS - None. 9.
