Package-ID Orig.Computer Test Computer
CCC-0612/01 IBM PC PC-80486
3.
DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM OR FUNCTION - The ALPHN program calculates the (alpha,n) neutron production rate in a mixture of chemical species receiving alpha-particles from alpha-emitting actinides.
4.
METHOD OF SOLUTION - The user specifies the mass fractions of the chemical species in the mixture and the curies of each actinide. Other basic data (stopping powers and thick-target yields) are supplied from the data libraries distributed with the program. The method of West is used to calculate the neutron yield for a single alpha-particle energy. The total neutron production rate per canister is the summation taken over all actinides i, and actinide i is assumed to emit a-particles with a single average initial energy.
5.
RESTRICTIONS ON THE COMPLEXITY OF THE PROBLEM - The total mixture yield calculated is a source term and does not take into account the shielding effect of the glass. For a given glass composition, the user can calculate up to eight cases simultaneously.
6.
TYPICAL RUNNING TIME - Run time for a typical problem containing 20 chemical species, 24 actinides, and 8 decay times was 34 seconds on an IBM AT personal computer.
7.
UNUSUAL FEATURES OF THE PROGRAM - 8.
RELATED AND AUXILIARY PROGRAMS - 9.

ALPHN CCC-0612/01 Tested
CCC-0612/01:
ALPHN was run at the NEA-DB on a 66-MHz PC/80486. Only a few tenths of a second of elapsed time are needed to execute the "test case".
Data Libraries
- STPN6A.OU3: Stopping powers and yields.
- CURIES.IN9: Alpha curies of each actinide.

ALPHN - A Computer Program for Calculating (alpha,n) Neutron
Production in Canisters of High-Level Waste
ORNL/TM-12239 (October 1992).
CCC-0612/01:
The sample problems were run at the NEA-DB on a PC DELL 466/L (processor 80486, 66 MHz, 16 Mbytes of installed RAM). The size of the executable file produced using the Microsoft compiler and linker is 41 Kbyte, whereas the size of the executable file created using the Lahey compiler and linker (using the stub loader) is 277 Kbytes.
CCC-0612/01: FORTRAN-77
CCC-0612/01:
ALPHN was run under MS-DOS 6.2. Two different executable files were created, compiled and linked respectively with: - the Lahey F77L-EM32 FORTRAN 77 compiler version 5.20 and the Lahey linker 386LINK version 5.1 and - the Microsoft FORTRAN 77 compiler version 5.10 and linker version 5.15.
